The annual list of the best engines in the industry according to the Wards Auto publication has just been published, and for the first time in its history it includes four electrified engines. In addition, no German manufacturer is on the list while Ford and Honda have two engines each in the list 2018. Now in its 24th year, the pal mares of Wards Auto aims to identify new engines introduced in the market as well as those that received significant improvements that stand out in terms of power, efficiency, working silently and the application of new technologies. Each motor in the running is evaluated by the Wards Auto team during their daily trips in October and November.
Here are the top 10 engines of 2018 according to Ward’s Auto
150 kW electric motor – Chevrolet Bolt
Pent star Hybrid Plug-In V6 Engine – Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
2.7L V6 twin turbo engine – Ford F-150
5.0 liter V8 engine – Ford Mustang GT
130 kW electric / hydrogen motor – Honda Clarity
2.0 liter turbo four cylinder engine – Honda Civic Type R
3.0-liter turbo V6 engine – Infiniti Q50
2.0 liter four-cylinder turbo engine – Jaguar XF
3.3-liter turbo V6 engine – Kia Stinger
2.5-liter Four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle Engine – Toyota Camry Hybrid
Chrysler Portal: the connected electric minivan
Safety, fuel economy, autonomous driving and connectivity. The majority of new vehicles coming, whether over the next few months or years, will push technological limits in one or more of these four areas. Take for example the Chrysler Portal unveiled today at the CES Las Vegas Convention. Powered by a fully electric motor and a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Portal impresses with its 400 kilometers of autonomy as well as its embedded connectivity technologies about waterproof car cover.
In the first place, the Portal (the English term for portal as in a web portal) will have an easy and voice recognition system able to identify the passengers who have just taken place in the cabin and thus activate their personal preferences for seating positions, air conditioning and display screens. Screens, the Chrysler Portal has a lot. The center console is a big screen, and there is a long digital band on the dashboard. A unique audio system called Zoned Audio allows passengers to listen to their own music without disturbing their neighbor, and there are even cameras that can take self-portraits in the car. An intercom allows passengers to chat with the occupants of the third row without raising their tone.
As it should be, self-driving systems will also be offered. Chrysler does not promise 100% autonomous driving, but it will still be possible to let yourself be driven in specific situations. The Chrysler Portal is obviously a concept vehicle and it will probably not be produced in its current form. In return, many of the technologies we find in the Portal will likely be offered by Chrysler in the near future.
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Test Drive 2017, one of a kind
Do not look, there are no other minivans that are plug-in and affordable. Chrysler is therefore focusing on this exclusivity, and on government financial incentives, to popularize its all-new Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, which will be launched in Canada by the end of the year. It must be said that the vehicle has many qualities. Based on the Chrysler Pacifica more traditional, it takes the main lines, both in terms of driving and equipment. Because remember, the Chrysler Pacifica had given itself the mission to rejuvenate the segment of minivans, and it must be admitted that the operation is quite successful.
But in this case, we added an electric motor, with reduced capacity, it must be said, but which still manages a real tour de force: maintain a consumption average of 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers, when the we put all the energy on the ground. Physically, the nuances are minimal. The Chrysler logo features a teal logo, a body color also available exclusively for the hybrid version. A small logo and a hatch for recharging complete the changes.
Small precision: under the hood of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the 3.6 liter V6 Pent star engine that is now the law at Chrysler. It has of course been retouched a little for the occasion. He was paired with an electric motor housed in the transmission rather than the axles, a method estimated more efficient by the engineers. In total, the two engines combined give a power of 260 horses, but impossible to know the distribution between the two engines. This is the best kept secret of FCA and even the engineers responsible for the project believe that this information is not important for the consumer, who prefers to know the total amount. Question of perspective…
For powering the electric motor, a battery of 16 kWh is mounted under the rear seat, thereby eliminating the seats Stow’s GB. Sad for the lost cargo space (even when this principle retained for 3 e row), but good news for second-row occupants who now have seats worthy of the name rather than too rigid boards that were used as bases in the other versions. The electric motor is powered by a power outlet. Plugging it into the traditional 110-volt home network will require a lot of patience, since full charging takes about 14 hours. Fortunately, in 240 volts mode, it will take two hours and you’re done!
Good news, since the battery of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has the required capacity, the Government of Quebec has agreed to grant him the maximum amount of financial assistance available for the purchase of an electric car. Buyers will receive a rebate of approximately $ 8,000 ($ 14,000 in Ontario and $ 8,500 in British Columbia).
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid displays a similar road behavior to its more traditional version, as it should be. The choice to position the batteries at the center and bottom of the vehicle allows to rely on a more balanced center of gravity, which shows a little in turn, but without excess. Obviously, because the departures are in all-electric mode, the accelerations are totally silent. And since the Pacifica is a highly soundproof vehicle, the occupants are not bothered by rolling noise either. Then there is autonomy. The technical sheet specifies a capacity of 48 kilometers. Despite the sinusitis and the relief of the Californian roads, we managed to maintain this average, without making any effort of saving of energy it is necessary to specify it. A careful driver could probably have added a few kilometers without too much compromise.
There are some flats, however. When the battery is fully discharged, or when acceleration requires (the electric mode turns off at 120 kilometers per hour), the change to the gasoline engine requires no action from the driver, but is not done not smoothly. Of course, it is felt at startup, but it is especially the thunderous roar that accompanies the gasoline engine that disturbs. Another detail, the Chrysler Pacifica does not have a retaining button to spare the battery. So we drive on the highway by burning electric energy capabilities, while we finish the race in the city by rolling on gasoline. We are told that the car is smart enough to make the nuance, but that remains to be proven. A good word however for the regeneration system. Effective in braking, it is spectacular in deceleration. A steep descent of a few kilometers allowed me to recover some 17% of the battery capacity without changing my behavior as a driver.
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is available in Canada in Platinum version only. This implies that it comes equipped with all the amenities that give Pacifica that little luxury, including the Connect Theater back, and a long list of accessories shared with the gasoline version. However, we must do without the vacuum cleaner, whose space is occupied by the electrical system. Of course, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is not given: $ 56,495 at launch in a few weeks. But the builder was good at reminding us that the financial incentives made it competitive with other versions. To be honest, if I had to turn to a minivan Pacifica, it is undoubtedly the hybrid version that would attract me. Innovative, it is well worth the few extra dollars required to obtain it.
